Campbeltown's Kilkerran Gun Battery

Preparing to defend his Kintyre lands against an invasion by The Earl of Antrim during 'The Bishops Wars', The Marquis of Argyll erected a gun battery overlooking the entrance to Campbeltown Loch and its construction recalled in the names of The Trench and Fort Argyll. Over two hundred years later, The 1st Argyll and Bute Garrison Artillery (Volunteers), an artillery company for coastal defence, manned the battery of sixty pound coastal defence guns at Kilkerran.
