Will the world end on December 21, 2012? Many people think some great disaster or event will take place due to the influence of either the Mayan Long Count Calender, the Planet - X (Nibiru), the alignment of the universe, meteors or a polar shift. So is there any possibility that one of these things or all them will happen on that day? Let us take a look at the possibilities. The Mayan's Calender The Mayans lived in present day Mexico and were a sophisticated but superstitious people. They worshipped the sun and offered human sacrifices to it, and they also feared the wind as evil spirit at times. They used several different calenders. One of them was called the Long Count Calender, and it has a cycle of 5,125 years. It began on August 11, 3114 BC but it ends on December 21, 2012. Some people think that the Mayans knew something that we do not and thus concluding that the world will end on that date. This is not true, as even the Mayans never said that it end then. Some archaeologists have concluded that the Mayans simply ran out of space when recording their calender. Others have simply said that just another calender begins after that time. Even as our calenders end on December 31, and begin again on January 1, of the following year. The Sumerians and Nibiru Many years ago the Sumerians believed that there was a planet called Nibiru (known today as Planet - X) which would collide with earth, and bring about great destruction. Originally it was supposed to happen in 2003. Since the end of the world did not happen then, those who believed in the prophecy adjusted it to be on the day that the Mayan Calender end, December 21, 2012. So in summary, it is a failed prophecy brought to life again by another separate event and nothing more than that. Astronomers say if there was a unknown planet or Nibiru, it would of been easily detected thirty or forty years ago. Today if there were such a planet anyone going outside looking at the sky would plainly see it. But is is not there! Another hoax. The Planetary Alignment The planets are supposedly going align up in 2012 according to some people, and throw the earth out orbit; which will cause great disturbances on the earth. Nasa states the following things. "There is no such alignment. There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible." Neither is a blackout imminent from December 23-25, in 2012. They say this. "The false reports on this issue claim that some sort of 'alignment of the Universe' will cause a blackout." Not true according to the latest scientific knowledge.
