MA Urban Design - Iyaneshpandian Dissertaion

The research paper is presented and submitted as a Dissertation deciding on my MA in Urban Design with Oxford Brookes University, 2015. A big personal milestone of mine and my family. The dissertation is about, how to utilize urban open spaces either public or private, in terms of urban agriculture to make the urban settlement self sufficient as well as sustainable. The research process identifies the scarcity of food in the future with respect to growth in population, human migration and population density, pollution and disasters, over used resources and thick margin between urban and rural sectors etc., The research is not about turning urban spaces productive, but also the research involves how to turn it sustainable by means of environmental qualities, community participation and positive cohesion, balancing ecology, bringing in flora and fauna into the context of urbanism, employment, economics, climatic check, reducing carbon footprint and food miles. Adequate precedents have been quoted for the research purpose with extensive literature reviews and case studies supporting the aim of the research. And the research findings were analyzed and design framework is developed to develop, design management guidelines which are incorporated into an existing site condition in the UK (design based research), and with the quantitative analysis along with physical interviews with the users and experts the research aim is achieved with scope of further research over the cost and investment department and advanced maintenance technologies.
