MI5 Controlling British Media

MI5 employs at least 3,800 people, what do they all do? It is not necessary to employ such a large amount of agents for such a small island nation as this. The 'cold war' is ended, the communist threat has subsided, the threat of nuclear war is no more, so what do they do in peacetime instead of investigating all these last threats?
