British scientist-engineer Thomas Newcomen’s novel concept of atmospheric engine ushered a new chapter in industry in 1712. It was the maiden invention to harness the power of steam to produce mechanical work based on which James Watt came up with his new design of steam engine that revolutionized the transportation around the world. Newcomen’s unique engine also paved the way for the development of hydraulic technology based on which a mechanical actuator generates a unidirectional force from a unidirectional stroke. This technology has found applications in hundreds of engineering and allied tasks.
